Summer, week 6: Could I hate Fortnite any more? Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat.
Yeah, I’m trying to come up with something good to say, but this has not been the best couple of weeks. Actually I would say this summer has been one of those curious mixes of high highs and low lows co-existing, day by day.
I tried this week to chill out a bit and I found my way back to the garden. I haven’t done much out there this year, but this week I pulled some weeds, planted some more seeds (parsley, zinnias, lettuce, cilantro) and installed some critter protection. I was about to plant arugula, walked over to the place it was growing last, and found new shoots coming up in an empty planter next to the original planter.
The dried-out old arugula plants, seen in the background with the white flowers, leaned over and dropped their seeds there.
The beans have continued to produce and I’ve been picking them and eating them every few days. I steam them for 2 minutes in the microwave and eat them plain. When the temps were in the 90s they were a little tough but they’re fine now. However the plants seem to have developed bean mosaic virus.
A few days ago I made veggie fried rice, and tonight I finished it off, adding chicken and… beans of course.
I ate basil and mozzarella sandwiches so often that I had to take a break from them. So I’ll have to freeze the basil that’s out there now. That’s my yummy olive oil from Blue Moon downtown.
I also made chocolate chip cookies and Rice Krispie treats this week. Lots of pool time lately, especially after dinner. Watching “Orange Is the New Black” at night. Put a hold on “The Sparsholt Affair” at the library after reading a free sample on Kindle (had read a good review of this a while back). Also got Barbara Ehrenreich’s book on health care at the library, the title escapes me (another one that I read a free sample of first. Try before you (don’t actually) buy).
Some recent wins:
— Realized Mom’s Organic Market charged me for a watermelon that I did not buy; went back the next day and got my $8 back.
— Returned a bathing suit that didn’t fit Gemma (I thought for sure I was never going to return it and end up giving it away).
— Sold two lots of baby clothes and a dress on Poshmark.
— Avoided the urge to just buy the book that Aidan needs to read over the summer for school, and patiently waited for it to come back to the library (all the middle school reading list books were hot commodities).
— Cut my own hair last week, and Gemma’s. Her haircut is a win, at least; mine, not so much… But hey, it will grow back, and it feels better.
— Took a whole bunch of stuff to Goodwill and recycled a ton of clothes at H&M, thereby clearing out the back of my van and part of my bedroom that had been accumulating stuff.
— Hubs fixed a broken broom and a broken weedwhacker, saving us from buying new ones.
— I always eat breakfast at home and bring my lunch or snack from home to work. Only one time have I stopped at Wawa on the way up to the farm.
Working tomorrow at the farm. Sunday, if the weather cooperates I’m going to plant carrots and do a lot of clean up out back.
In cat hijinks news, today, Penn the cat somehow got himself under a towel and then, perhaps thinking himself invisible, crept up on and attacked his brother, Teller. Then Penn got his body stuck in the towel and Teller proceeded to whale on his head for a while. Good times.
